Helping women love what they wear on a budget

Baby Update- 20 Months

October 11, 2017 by Katie Haller

I’ve been really bad at keeping up with Jack’s baby updates.  I meant to do a post for 15 months, then I didn’t get to it so I thought I’d do it at 18 months, but that didn’t happen, so now I’m trying for 20 months.  I really love sharing updates on Jack, because he’s the light of my life.  Plus, I like to use my blog as a way to look back on memories.  I don’t scrapbook anymore, so this is my way of making a scrapbook.

Jack is 20 months and I would like to know where the time went??  I can’t believe that he will be 2 before I know it.  Jack is really developing into his own little person lately.  He has a great personality.  He’s very smart, very serious at times and he just soaks in everything around him.  He also loves to laugh, he’s funny, playful and he can be super sweet.
Currently, Jack’s favorite toys are his puzzles, cars, foam letters, books, train and oh yeah… the iPad.  I know a lot of people have different opinions on children under 2 having screen time, but I don’t mind it at all.  Jack has learned so much from the YouTube shows that he watches.  He knows almost all the upper case letters, his colors, shapes and numbers 1-10.  I am so impressed with his learning abilities.  He catches on so quickly.

Jack has been in child care full time for almost a year now and he loves it.  We have had such a great experience with his school.  He loves his teacher, his friends and I’m pretty sure that he likes the toys there more than his toys at home.  I feel like it’s been so good for him to spend time around other children his age.  Although, I am learning that he is really bad at sharing.  Apparently he doesn’t like it when the younger baby’s in his class play with the toys incorrectly.
As for sleep, Jack has been sleeping through the night for about 6 months now.  Halleluiah!!  It was a long first year of getting up almost every 2 hours, but as soon as we got rid of bottles, Jack stopped waking up.  Now mommy and daddy can finally sleep soundly, besides the few occasional nights when he’s not feeling good or teething.
Over all Jack is a good eater, but it definitely depends on his mood.  If he’s in a bad mood, he throws his food at me, if he’s happy he eats it.  He really loves cheese, macaroni and cheese, pears, oranges and milk.  He loves his “ma” as he calls it.
Jack is talking up a storm lately.  I swear he adds 3 new words to his vocabulary everyday.  He says “dada” all the time.  He says “mama” when he wants something or is crying.  My favorite word that he says is flower “fow fer”.  He loves listening to music and dancing.  He’s even starting to sing, which I think is hilarious.  He sounds like a dying whale or something, but it’s just too cute.
I can tell that 2 is right around the corner, because my little baby boy is turning into a toddler monster at times.  He has started these dramatic tantrums when he doesn’t get what he wants.  He screams, throws himself on the floor, kicks his legs and throws things.  It’s all a show to see how far he can go.  I’ve even caught him watching himself in the mirror during one of his fits.  It’s pretty entertaining, but also a little frustrating when you can’t reason with your little human.

Over all it’s been an amazing 20 months!  I love everyday of being Jack’s mom.  With each age, I feel like somethings get a little easier and other things get harder.  I only wish I could slow him down a little bit.

Mom Blog Picture Fails

July 17, 2017 by Katie Haller

Hey everyone!  It’s Monday and on Monday’s I like to try to share a mom or family post for Mommy Monday.  I don’t always get around to posting one, but today I had an idea for a fun mom post.

I’m not sure about you, but I spend a lot of time on social media looking at other people’s pictures and I love it and hate it all at the same time.  I love getting inspired by other people’s photos, but at the same time, everyone on social media makes their lives look so perfect.  They post these perfect pictures of their perfect lives and for some reason, we all feel like we need to keep up with that perfect image.  I’m defiantly guilty of that.  I don’t want to share an ugly picture of myself, or talk about a fight I got into with my husband.  We only share the good.

Recently, I was going through my pictures on my phone and deleting the photos I don’t need when I came across some funny pictures that didn’t really turn out so great.  If you’re a mom and you have ever tried to capture the perfect picture with your little one, you know how hard it can be.  All those perfect moms with their kids didn’t get that shot on a first try.  Trust me.  Today I wanted to get real with you and share some of my not so great mommy and me pictures with Jack.

Taking your own outfit pictures is not always easy when you have a clingy teething one-year-old.

I hope you enjoyed those pictures as much as I did.  Do you have any photo outtakes that make you laugh with your little ones?

Michigan Trip

July 10, 2017 by Katie Haller

Hey everyone!  I feel like I’ve been out of the loop for a while because I was on vacation and away from my computer for a week.  Now I’m back and just trying to get back into my normal routine.

Last week, my family and I spent a week in Michigan visiting our family.  Ever since we moved to Las Vegas, our number one destination has been Michigan.  We have been trying to go back twice a year so we can spend time with both sides of our family and share Jack with everyone.  I always thought that Kevin and I were so lucky because our family is all in the same place, but ever since we moved away, I find it to be difficult to have all our family in one place.  We get one week to squeeze in a visit with everyone and it can get a little overwhelming at times, especially with a baby.  That’s why this trip was our last Michigan trip for a while.  We decided we want to take some time to visit some other places this next year and hopefully we will have lots of visitors come out our way.

It was our 3rd trip to Michigan with Jack, but it was our first time going back on Kevin’s airline and traveling with our flight benefits as a family.  If you have ever traveled standby, you understand how nerve-racking it can be.  We totally lucked out though and ended up making it onto 2 initially full flights.  On top of making the flights, Jack was the best little traveler that he’s ever been.  I was so proud that I wasn’t the one on the flight with the screaming child.
We flew into Grand Rapids, MI, because that’s the closest airport to our families that Kevin’s airline flies to Vegas from.  I actually prefer the Grand Rapids airport.  It’s smaller than DTW and it’s easier to get around with a baby.  They even have a kid’s playroom that Jack loved.
Our trip was pretty non stop and the week flew by so fast.  We visited both sides of our families.  Jack got to see grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  In our short week, we squeezed in a trip to the Detroit Zoo, visited a couple lakes, the Yankee Air Museum, a tour of downtown Detroit and a 4th of July parade.  I even got to be reunited with my favorite Michigan beer that we can’t get out in Nevada.
Here are a few pictures from our week.

Shop Jack’s wardrobe.  A lot is on sale right now!

It’s always nice going home, but it’s also always nice coming back to my other home.  I only wish we would have had more time to see more people, but there’s always next time!

Do you live away from family? Does anyone else spend their summer vacations in their home state?

Nelson Ghost Town

June 21, 2017 by Katie Haller

One of the best things about living in Las Vegas is that there is always something to do.  We never seem to run out of new places to explore.  Last weekend, my husband suggested we take a drive out to a ghost town.  On Saturday morning we packed up Jack and headed to Nelson Ghost Town before the heat really set in.

Nelson was a gold mining town in the 1800s and early 1900’s, with a bit of a dark history.  There are a few original buildings still standing, along with lots of antiques to create the perfect ghost town atmosphere.  I felt like I was on a movie set.  A lot of people go out to Nelson for photoshoots, and I completely see why.  The town makes the perfect backdrop for photographers.

Here are some of the pictures my husband and I took.  I didn’t get as many as I would have liked, because Jack was keeping me extremely busy.

If you’re ever in Las Vegas and looking for something to do that’s different than the typical strip activities, I definitely recommend taking a trip out to Nelson.  It’s about a 45-minute drive from the strip, just south of Boulder City.  It’s worth the drive, I would just recommend getting there early in the morning if you are going during the summer months so you can beat the heat.

Instagram Roundup- Spring 2017

May 24, 2017 by Katie Haller

Spring 2017
Hey everyone!  It’s hard to believe that summer is almost here!  June is just around the corner.  I thought that now would be the perfect time to do an Instagram roundup of some of my favorite Instagram posts that didn’t make it to the blog.

You may have noticed that I’ve been making a few changes around here.  I’ve kept this little blog of mine a secret for a long time and this year, one of my goals is to grow my following and share my blog with others.  I’m pretty shy and I’m not always comfortable putting myself out there,  but I do put a lot of time and effort into my blog, so I figured why not share my hard work?
The one place I’ve been putting a lot of time into growing my following and promoting my blog is on Instagram.  I love Instagram, but it’s hard work trying to get followers, especially when I really don’t have the tons of extra time for social media.  Motherhood and my job take up the majority of my time, but since I enjoy blogging so much, I try to make the time for it.
So today I want to go back and recap my spring through my Instagram (@thriftywifehappylife)

I love trying out new beauty products.  This spring I tried out a few new products and stuck with a few of my favorites.  I’m really loving anything pink right now!

The dress is thrifted similar here
Our Easter was nice and quiet.  I had a week off work, which was amazing!!  We spent the first part of my break in Denver visiting my sister in law, then we came home and finished off the week just relaxing and enjoying the weather.  I even got a cute picture on Easter with my cute little guy.
Similar Bathing Suit || Similar Hat || Similar Sunglasses
Pool season has officially arrived and I finally got the chance to wear this cute polka dot bikini that I bought at the end of the summer last year at Walmart for only $2!

Tank top || Cardigan || Similar Jeans || Purse
I made a few trips to Old Navy this spring to stock up on some super cheap tank tops.  I’ve been loving my $2 tanks that I bought at the end of April.  They are perfect for wearing under my cardigans with jeans.

Similar Hat || Similar bathing suite Top and Bottoms
I’ve been learning what it’s like to take a busy toddler to the pool and let’s just say that my summers at the pool aren’t as relaxing as they used to be, but that’s okay.  That’s mom’s life for you.  I’m loving my new pool hat.  I found this one in the dollar section at Target for $5.  It’s the perfect pool accessory.

Dress || Shoes || Purse || Necklace
My go to outfits this spring have been dresses with my denim jacket.  It’s such a comfy and also safe look, especially when I feel stumped on what to wear.

Top || Necklace || Sunglasses
I’ve rediscovered my love for the color pink this spring.  I just love this bright pink tank top.  I especially love it with turquoise accessories.

My poor baby had an ear infection over Mother’s Day weekend, so he was very cranky.  We had a hard time getting a good picture, but that’s okay, because he’s still cute, fussy or not.
Purse || Similar Shorts || Similar Shoes
Now that it’s pretty much summer, I have to break out the shorts.  I don’t really like wearing shorts, but it’s really hard to wear long jeans when it’s over 100 degrees, so it looks like I’m going to have to embrace my shorts.

So that’s my life through Instagram.  Don’t forget to follow me for the latest posts!

Confessions of a First Time Mom- Pregnancy

May 8, 2017 by Katie Haller

Lately, I’ve been seeing so many people I know announce that they are pregnant with their first child.  I always love seeing this, because it wasn’t long ago I was in their shoes.  It brings back a lot of memories and emotions about my own experience.  I was so excited for the future, yet so scared of the unknown.  Today, with Mother’s Day being at the end of the week, I wanted to share my personal experience of being pregnant as a first time mom.
I had a difficult beginning to my pregnancy.  I learned that I was pregnant not long after experiencing my second miscarriage.  I never thought that I would go through anything like that when the time came to have a baby, so it caught me off guard and left me with a very distraught feeling that wouldn’t go away.  The first time I miscarried, I was very disappointed, but also hopeful.  The second time that it happened, I felt very alone.  We had only been living in Las Vegas for a couple months and I hadn’t told anyone that I was pregnant.  I was so saddened by the whole experience, that I was afraid to try again.  It wasn’t long after that second miscarriage, that I felt like something was off.  I kept waiting for my period to start, but nothing happened.  I decided to take a pregnancy test and sure enough, it was true.  I kept it to myself, in fear of it being too soon to tell, so I took one more test later in the week.  Sure enough, it showed I was pregnant.  The next morning I threw up and knew it had to be true.
18-week baby bump

My first trimester was long and miserable.  I threw up almost every day.  I was so tired and sick.  I remember feeling so sad because I thought pregnancy was supposed to be an exciting and happy time in my life.  I was worried all the time because I thought that something bad was going to happen to the baby.  The one thing that saved me during this time, surprisingly, was going to work every day.  As sick as I was, I never called in and I never threw up at work.  It kept me busy and kept my mind off how yucky I felt.  When I hit 12 weeks and was still sick I got concerned that the morning sickness would never go away.  Then one day, probably around 15 or 16 weeks I didn’t throw up my breakfast.  After that, I magically started to feel like a human again.

Once I got over my morning sickness, I started getting excited about my pregnancy.  My ultrasound at 18 weeks was definitely a high light.  I found out that I was having a boy and that everything was developing well.  I was able to worry less and start to enjoy myself a little more.  My belly popped out right around 20 weeks and that’s when I got really excited about styling my bump.  I started my weekly maternity post on my blog which I really enjoyed. (You can check those out here) I felt good in my second trimester, for the most part.  I did start to feel very uncomfortable around 22 weeks.  As the baby grew, my body grew and stretched in ways it never had before, making it very uncomfortable.
28-week bump
By my third trimester, I had the perfect size bump and I felt as good as I could feel.  I do remember feeling extremely anxious.  I started watching people’s birth stories on youtube and reading lots of other blogger’s birth stories.  I prepared myself for the worse.  I was ready to get my little guy out, it didn’t matter how.  Despite all my research, when the time came and I went into labor, I didn’t believe it.  I had to google “water breaking” over and over again.  It wasn’t until I started having strong contractions that I believed I was in labor.
It was a really weird feeling when I finally got to hold my little man in my arms.  I was in awe of him and couldn’t stop thinking about the whole experience.  As much as I was ready to get him out, I immediately missed feeling him inside me.  I wanted to be pregnant again….if that made any sense?

Snuggling with my newborn
I would love to have another baby someday, but I’m not in a rush.  I’m enjoying all the moments I can with Jack right now and our little family of 3.  I do miss that feeling of being pregnant at times, and I look forward to experiencing it again one day.  It makes me a little sad to think that nothing will be like the first time, but it does excite me to know that the next time I am pregnant, I will be sharing it with Jack too.  I look forward to the day that I can make him a big brother.

What was your first pregnancy experience like?  How was it different from your others?

Happy Mother’s Day!! 💕 Today I am truly embracing this day and remembering how much I always wanted to be a mom!

I recently came across a journal entry I wrote 10 years ago on Mother’s Day—right after my second miscarriage. I wrote that I was ready to be a mom, but I was so scared and worried about our future. I didn’t know when and if it would actually happen.

One month later, I was pregnant with my son.

And now here I am, ten years later—tired, busy, deeply grateful, and fully embracing this season I once wanted so so bad!

To every mom today—in the waiting, in the chaos, or missing the days that flew by—I see you. We are all in this together! 💕
